It was a night of sturdy songs, cast iron ballads and timeless tunes, many selected by the legendary Man In Black himself from a list of essential tracks he gave to his eighteen year old daughter in the seventies. That same daughter, Rosanne Cash, grown up now and blessed with a pure, crystalline bell-like voice that is amazing to behold, took the stage Friday night at the Harris Theatre for an XRT show performing songs from her latest album The List. The set included Hank Snow’s “I’m Movin’ On,” Dylan’s “Girl From the North Country,” Bobby Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Joe, the traditional “Motherless Children,” and some original numbers as well. Rosanne’s husband/record producer John Leventhal provided excellent support on guitar, getting an astounding variety of sounds out of a single instrument, and supplied vocals and witty asides to his better half during the inevitable tuning sequences. A series of original paintings were projected on three screens above the stage to enhance each song. The audience was rapt and attentive as only an Old Town School audience can be; absolutely silent until it was time to applaud. Rosanne Cash may have been born with a famous name, but is now a full- fledged member of one of the world’s finest musical families based on her own ability.
