Although I have lived in Chicago my whole life, and am an avid concertgoer, the closest I have ever been to the Aragon Ballroom was the view of the shining lights from my seat on the Red Line. As I walked in last night for the Modest Mouse concert I was met with security guards groping around for any illegal contraband, girls in cool vintage clothes, dirty boys with beards and cutoff jeans, and hundreds of pairs of black wire-rimmed glasses.
The Seattle-based band, The Dutchess and Duke, were first on the bill. Their chill tones were perfect for an opening act; allowing people to stroll in late, grab a beer or chat with friends, while all the while playing a great show that everyone enjoyed.
When Modest Mouse finally came out, the crowd went crazy. They played all of their big hits, including ‘Dashboard’, ‘The World at Large’, and my favorite, ‘Blame it on the Tetons’. The band was great, really getting into each song and enjoying every moment. However, being just over five feet tall I spent most of my night staring at the Aragon’s starry blue ceiling, or the sweat dripping down the necks of the thousands of happy fans, rather than Isaac Brock. The show ended with an encore from the band, which each member seemed to play with as much enthusiasm as each excited concertgoer had for being able to listen to the extra songs.
All in all, the Modest Mouse concert was a great time. Whether it was because of the awesome music, an amazing crowd, an excellent venue with more than enough bars, or a combination of all three, I can honestly say that it was really fun and I would totally go to see them again
