For some reason the Kaiser Chiefs were under the impression that not many of the “Citizens of Lollapalooza” had heard of them. We begged to differ.
It’s interesting to see how music festivals work when competing stages have acts right after each other. On Sunday at 2:30pm, Portugal. The Man tossed the torch from the Playstation stage over to the Kaiser Chiefs at Budweiser. Great success. The Brits started out with high energy, and didn’t let up despite a few thoughtful observations. “It’s pretty hot. Just thought you’d like to know.”
Lead singer Ricky Wilson acknowledged that it was the keyboardist, Peanut’s, last gig with the group, and dedicated the performance to his honor. It was also their last stop on the American tour. Wilson jumped off the stage twice to be with the people, cheered for the band he “could watch all day long,” and hopped back up to sign along with the ASL woman. Later in the set he even started climbing up the right side of the stage. Entertainment!
The crowd proved itself adequately loud in the vocal department, in Wilson’s opinion, and the group rewarded their fans with all the hits. I was particularly excited to hear “Ruby” since it’s been my ringtone for years, and they also played “Modern Way,” “I Predict a Riot,” “The Angry Mob,” and “Oh My God.” It may have been slightly too hot for the crowd to get as rowdy as would be right for Kaiser Chiefs, but it’s clear that whether you were heading across the Atlantic or Lake Michigan, you went home happy.
