Andrew Bird at Lollapalooza ‘09

How someone can whistle better than most people playing an instrument is beyond me. As show time approached closer and closer, you could see a nervous Andrew Bird waiting back stage. I read earlier that day about how different shows are for Bird when he plays in Chicago, his home town, and it definitely seemed like the pressure of the show was getting to him. However as he walked on stage, with giant, decorative gramophones spinning behind him, Bird went from meek to confident; a total transformation which led him to play an amazing set.

Everything about Bird is a little quirky; His appearance, his mannerisms, the fact that whistling is one of his most defining features. Luckily for Bird, his fans are just as quirky as he is, and we ate up every bit of his performance; classical violin, whistling, “Snacks” and all. (Get it; he played that song, a crowd favorite.)

This was my first Andrew Bird show, and I was blown away. He really delivered and I can’t wait to catch him again.

  1. I must say, disappointed in Andrew’s show on 12/15. Never thought it could be possible with how talented he is….but alas, I was not pleased. Don’t get me wrong, the instrumentals he played were great…but I was hoping for more songs to be sung than merely 2 hours of instrumentals with maybe 3 actual songs. I wish he did a show that was more along the line of his Civic Opera performance—now THAT was an amazing concert! I really hope the next time I see him, it doesn’t pan out to be like the Fourth Presbyterian show. :-/

  2. Wow, I took a totally different take on that show. It was quite unique and very awe inspiring to me. It was supposed to be mostly instrumental, a quote from Andrew on the show – “What I hope to do with these shows is adapt my music completely to the atmosphere of the space and the season,” Bird said in the statement. “I’m inspired to do this based on childhood memories of performing Handel’s Messiah in various churches on an annual basis.

“The music will be mostly original instrumentals using my voice only to intone. I want the audience to be both lifted and comforted as we head into another cold and dark winter. I feel the space should be sacred so the audience can experience my music in a different atmosphere.”
To me it was PERFECT for the season. The atmosphere in the church was sacred and hushed, and the strings had a errie, haunting sound echoing thru the church. And don’t forget Andrew had a broken foot and had to perform sitting down – that was my only disappointment – because he was seated it was hard to see him unless you were in the very front rows.

  4. My, my, Caitlin. Name calling? ha ha ha! What a wonderful person you must be. Any one who disagrees with you is a loser? I know who the real loser is… I sense a bit of immaturity – grow up. I never disrespected you – I simply stated my opinion. In case anyone is interested here are some links to critical reviews of the Gezelligheid concerts:
