For all the honky tonks and barroom backrooms Neko Case has played in her career, there was something strangely intimate about the Chicago Theater last Friday night.
Maybe it was her self-deprecating admission that her dress was so tight that it was only a matter of time before she toppled over. Maybe it was the casual banter with the inordinately talented back-up singer Kelly Hogan. Maybe it was the adoration of an audience who treats her like the hometown girl she was for a few years.
Neko Case has a truly captivating voice. There’s an edge to her singing that slivers the heart like a chanteuse in a Bogart movie. The harmonies of singers Kelly Hogan and Nora O’Connor left me slack-jawed.
Neko Case’s new album, Middle Cyclone, is a landmark in her career and it was a tribute to the strength of that material that Neko and her band played seven new songs Friday night.
My day started at 4:30am Friday morning, but when Neko Case sang, “I’m so tired, I wish I was the moon tonight.” I didn’t feel tired at all.
For me, show of the year.
FIRST OF ALL, LIKE TO THANK XRT FOR THE FREE TICKETS!! LIVING IN THE FAR NORTHERN SUBURBS, WE DON’T GET TO VENTURE INTO THE CITY MUCH FOR CONCERTS. THE SHOW WAS ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!!! DIDN’T WANT IT TO END. THAT GIRL IS A REAL UNIQUE TALENT!
Neko Case has the power in her voice to become the become the female rock singer that will define her generation. When I first heard her voice I became an instant fan and look forward to all that she does in the future. Thanx to WXRT for sponsoring her show.
What a show Friday night. Lin, great introduction too. Neko’s confident and powerful voice kept everybody’s attention that night and especially mine. That was the first time I saw Neko and probably won’t be the last. I highly recommend her new album as well as seeing her live. I haven’t been to that good of a concert this year yet. Exquisite performance!
In addition, Lin, your introduction of her, interweaving how the stars had come together for this show, with the best weather of year and the smells of the chocalate factory as you exited the Kennedy, all added up to a great evening. I had liked Neko Case before going to this show, now I am a big fan. Her band was great, and what a treat to see Nora O’Connor as well as Kelly Hogan, up there. A day I will not forget!
