Umphrey's McGee

Umphrey’s McGee CD Release Party

Monday night, local progressive rockers Umphey’s McGee played a cd release party celebrating the arrival of their long awaited new album Mantis. A large enthusiastic crowd at the Vic theatre hung on every note and the performance was shared with Chicago and the world as a live XRT concert exclusive on 93.1FM and 93XRT.com. It was a more concise and tightly constructed show than their recent run of year end XRT gigs at the Auditorium with a minimal amount of special effects, but there were of course many sonic excursions that began with familiar numbers like Anchor Drops and Nemo. The band unveiled two songs from the new album: Made to Measure and Cemetery Walk, which were well received and will no doubt form a good part of their winter tour set lists. The sound was impeccable and the material crisply played by a group that harks back to the days of Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, King Crimson as well as the current crowd of so called jam bands like Widespread Panic and Phish. After the show, the band chatted with their fans and signed copies of the new cd. Expect to see them return when the weather gets warmer.

  1. Mantis is awesome, I have it on repeat. Can’t wait for these guys to land in NYC in April. Oh yeah, and Langerado in March.
Are they doing Summer Camp again this year??

  2. I am proud to say this was my 36th wonderful experience of Umphreys Mcgee. And yes, they are doing three shows at Summercamp this year. It was great to hear numbers they didn’t perform at the Auditorium gigs and even better to chat ‘em up at Alive One after the show. They are a very down-to-earth band and will be around for a while. I have yet to see a disappointing show. I wonder what their plans for summer are….

  3. I just discovered this band when I heard them on Soundstage over a week ago! I have heard WXRT mention their name, but I was not familiar with their music. I watched the Soundstage show twice and have ordered two of their CD’s.

I am way past the age of the people who would be at their concerts, but I want to see them at the next opportunity in Chicago.

I am a 55 year old female who was (and still is) a fanatic Yes fan in the 70’s. I saw Yes eleven times in the 70’s. I could see some Yes influence in their Soundstate performance. I also was/am a Pink FLoyd and King Crimson fan. I didn’t know a band like Umphreys McGee existed in this age! (where did that name come from???)
